Tetherball's NFC technology powers Indianapolis dealership scavenger hunt

INDIANAPOLIS – Tetherball announced great success from recent Near Field Communications, NFC, based scavenger hunt. Tetherball worked with local automotive dealership Burd Ford to measure and track participation and deliver real-time communication and rewards during their recent two-week event.

Tetherball created a solution that utilizes NFC technology with SMS messaging for the Burd Ford “Cash Quest” scavenger hunt from April 15-29. Each participant received a NFC card with instructions on activating their account. Participants “tethered” their card by simply sending a SMS message with their unique code to Tetherball.

"Burd Ford came to us with the idea of the scavenger hunt, but weren’t sure how to track the participation. We knew could implement our solution to bring the scavenger hunt to life and allow Burd Ford to track participation by utilizing NFC technology," said Scott Yancey, CEO of Tetherball.

Communication was delivered via social media to notify participants of daily events at sponsor locations. Participants checked-in by tapping their card against the Tetherball RewardStation on site at each location. This enabled the member, check-in time and specific location to be tracked. The RewardStation sends information over the cellular network to Tetherball’s loyalty platform. After participants checked in at a location, a personalized SMS message was instantly delivered to their mobile phone. These messages included digital coupons, gift cards and other prizes.

Participants were eligible for major prizes if they checked in at 12 of the 16 total locations. The participants’ enthusiasm for the event not only drove foot traffic into the participating scavenger hunt locations, which generated incremental revenue for all participating businesses.

Chris Burd, owner of Burd Ford, said “Tetherball's ability to measure participant activity through the event and to send hundreds of personalized, real-time SMS messages created a unique brand experience for our customers. We also wanted a solution that would work on more then just smart phones. The technology revived the concept of a scavenger hunt and brought it into the twenty-first century.”

Government should encourage more fuel-efficient cars

I appreciate President Barack Obama visiting Indianapolis and emphasizing the vital role auto manufacturers play in helping consumers.

Ford Motor Co. and other automobile manufacturers are investing billions of dollars to research and develop new fuel-efficient products, alternative fuel options and electrified vehicles.

As an Indianapolis-area Ford dealer, I have seen consumer demand for fuel-efficient vehicles continue to grow over the past several months. In fact, small car sales across the industry have risen from 19 percent in December to 25 percent at the end of March.

With rising gas prices impacting bottom lines and hitting consumers' wallets, it is critical for our country to have a comprehensive plan to reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy and to incentivize the move to cleaner, greener vehicles.

Developing vehicles that get better mileage per gallon must play a large role in this plan.
